Downtown
South Bend’s downtown neighborhood is an urban version of New York City’s East Village neighborhood. It has great nightlife, awesome restaurants and shops, and beautiful views of the St. Mary’s River. There are also incredible views of Chicago and Michigan from certain vantage points that overlook the river. Downtown is still relatively affordable for a neighborhood with so many amenities, especially considering its only about 15 minutes away from Notre Dame University. But be warned–this neighborhood is growing in popularity, which means it’s likely to become more expensive over time.
Granger
Granger neighborhood is located on the northwest side of South Bend and is filled with old, beautiful homes. It’s considered to be one of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city, mainly because it’s so close to downtown but feels far enough removed from it that you’re not constantly overwhelmed by people. Granger neighborhood has a unique charm and a great local feel.
Granger is a bustling suburb home to various large-sized homes. It is a great place for family vacations as well as permanent residency for large families.
Mishawaka
This neighborhood was once a suburb of South Bend but has been incorporated into the city itself. The homes here are large, with lots of land surrounding them, resulting in an ideal neighborhood for families with children or pets that need room to roam freely. There are tons of great schools in this neighborhood, as well as amazing restaurants and beautiful parks nearby. If you’re interested in moving here, make sure you have some extra money stashed away because it’s going to cost quite a bit more than other neighborhoods on this list.
Wooded Estates
Wooded Estates neighborhood is located on the far northeast side of South Bend and has a rural feel. It’s not as expensive as Mishawaka, but it’s still quite pricey for this neighborhood list. This neighborhood is very safe, and it’s quiet because there is not much traffic at all. The neighborhood consists mostly of middle-aged adults or high school students who live with their families at home while they attend nearby Notre Dame University or Saint Mary’s College.
Wooded Estates is one of the closest neighborhoods to Notre Dame – just a 15-minute walk away, making it a perfect neighborhood if you are looking for a place that is close to the Notre Dame campus.
Northshore Triangle neighborhood
Northshore Triangle is a neighborhood on South Bend’s north side that residents describe as peaceful and quiet. It has easy access to major roads but still provides an escape from traffic and noise.
Since this neighborhood is so close to the Notre Dame campus, it has become home to many Notre Dame professors, staff, and students. You can literally walk to campus within 10 minutes.
The neighborhood is relatively close to the St. Joseph River and has plenty of park space, making it a great neighborhood for walking or riding bikes with your family and pets.
Southeast Pond
Southeast Pond neighborhood is located just south of the campus and offers a neighborhood feel that’s not too suburban. It has easy access to buses, commuter trains, and shopping centers, so it’s a perfect neighborhood for people who want to avoid driving but still want all the perks of living near a major city.
